SPACE REVOLUTION DAY CELEBRATION
Space Revolution Day is a space celebration being held on 17th September to commemorate the birthday of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. A turning point for India’s space programme under the leadership and tenure of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi came in 2014 with the initiation of major space reforms. The Government has initiated several policy changes aimed at opening up the space sector to private participation and international collaboration. These reforms have proved to be revolutionary changes that have unleashed India’s space potential and created a platform for a big leap forward for India.
PSUs like BHEL, HAL, and BEL have been crucial in developing components and infrastructure for India’s space missions, fostering self-reliance, while private firms and start-ups are emerging as key contributors.
To facilitate private sector participation in satellite development, launch services, and space applications, IN-SPACe was established, and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) was formed to promote commercial utilization.
During the tenure of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and under the leadership of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), India has successfully launched over 400 foreign satellites into orbit and achieved major milestones such as Chandrayaan-3, Aditya-L1 (India’s first solar mission), Mangalyaan, NavIC, the EOS series of Earth observation satellites, space docking and servicing (SPADEX), Axiom-4 mission, and NISAR. Ongoing missions include the Gaganyaan program, Chandrayaan-4, Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), TV-D2 mission, and LVM3-M5/BlueBird Block-2 mission.
This reflects India's progress in space technology and an integrated national effort towards self-reliance in the field of space. It is also strengthening its proud place in the global space community, which embodies the true spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the field of space.
In recognition of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commendable contributions to the space sector and the historic achievements in space technology, and in view of the strategic transformation witnessed in India’s space revolution, India Space Week has decided to confer upon Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi the title of “Father of India’s Space Revolution.” It has also been decided that Space Revolution Day will be celebrated every year on 17th September, marking the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s birthday.
